In 2011, Netflix began acquiring original content for its popular subscription streaming service, beginning with the hour-long political drama House of Cards, which debuted on the streaming service in 2013. This marked the beginning of an increasingly large effort to acquire and produce original content, an effort that has resulted in critically successful shows such as Orange is the New Black, a fourth season of Arrested Development, and the Academy Award nominated documentary The Square.
